By developing a game with single/multiplayer the developer is forced to divide their b/w the two sides.... where as when it was just a single player experience (Bioshock, MGS2, God of War) they can totally focus all their time and more importantly resources on just the single player and thus making it a better game.
Basically multiplayer literally takes away from the single player experience and its difficult to have both and each be at a high caliber

Thats just how it is 70-79% is what is considered average in gaming (supposedly) and in school because 70s is the median were game scores typically fall.
